The start of the Helsinki Greens dates back to the
Helsinki Movement arisen in 1976. From the small activist group it was at the
time the Helsinki Greens have constantly grown and its member amount exceeded
the limit of one thousand at the end of 2009. At the latest Municipal Elections
in 2008, the Greens became the second largest political party in Helsinki. Helsinki
Greens consists of 15 sub organizations; most of them have regionally based
activities, each in their own neighborhood.
There are also separate organizations for youth and
students and the elderly. The Helsinki Greens are active regarding both local
and regional city planning issues and strive towards a more sustainable way of
living.
