Constructing the Europ
ean Dream City
Today more
than half of the world’s population lives in cities. This number is still
rising. Therefore it is important to know what makes a city a "good" city. The ingredients of a city are residential,
retail, office, green spaces and recreational, whereas industrial areas in the inner-city
are considered "unhealthy".
The
quantity of each ingredient is determined by DESTEP (demographic, economy,
social, technology, ecology, politics). A good city comprises a right balance
between these ingredients.
In order to
make a city sustainable, one of the key factors is making the city compact.
This is crucial, because a dense urban environment maximizes use of space.
Furthermore it provides tools to make the city safer, livelier and reduce
segregation. It also supplies city planners with the possibility to create
optimal the public transport.
Best
practice examples from several European
cities have been selected in this exhibition.
